Chapter Seven:
This Space Left Blank Intentionally
Peering over the still unmoving form of her child, Leira concentrated on what the woman had said. “Jym, what do you know about this Mentor of Davien’s?”
Puzzled for a moment, though never without an answer for long, the goblin said, “Don’t know. Just met the guy the other day. Mornin’ Cup, nice little tavern. Larger flagons than normal for the breakfast crowd.” Jymgreen quickly went back to dismembering the still twitching frog demon. For a short bit the demon had kicked quite violently during the dying process, Jym’s ‘Daughters’ had seen to its immobility.
Having never stopped gazing at her son, Leira arched an eyebrow as Jym finished his story then a revelation occurred to her. “Jym, stop what you’re doing for a moment. Please. I need you to do me a favor.” Looking towards the fire she was startled to see the gangly goblin at her side, his mouth too full to close but still making small and quick chewing-sawing motions.
An unintelligible noise and rubbing hands together in glee was the only response Leira received from the steadily drooling Jym. “I need you to scratch out the following symbols from the codex.” Quickly showing the goblin which symbols needed to be removed. The goblin, always enthused with vandalism, went wholehearted into the task.
While Jym worked to remove the magical runes from the demons codex, Leira stared intently at her child. The goblin grumbled obscenities as best he could whenever his ‘Darling’ struck a symbol at the wrong angle causing a tremendous spark. After a few moments the muffled cursing of the goblin, and the rest of the noise nearby, faded from Leira’s hearing. As the world around her vanished from hearing and sight, only her son remained for a moment, until even he faded to a dull gray before vanishing entirely.
“Davien.” Leira spoke his name as though he were with her and patiently awaited a response. It was his mind after all and she was just a visitor.
